Trees are important to us

Given ideal soil conditions, a root system will mirror the image of the plant above ground, radiating out the same distance below as the stems above. This becomes significant when visualizing the probable root spread when planning the area a tree will fill or when fertilizing an existing tree. The root hairs which absorb nutrients are mainly located on the outer reaches. This ration of the amount of below ground roots to above ground growth is particularly important when transplanting. If a substantial amount of the root is cut off when a plant is transplanted, an equal percentage of the top must be pruned as well so that the roots can cope.
